Despite having even-enough numbers, 2 triage carriers and so one we got totally wiped. I flew a Guardian in the fight and based on what I saw, RA employed the exact same tactic against me when I fought them in 2006 as a part of Lotka Volterra which we figured out based on the spies we had in their channel and our own observations. Here's what went down.
They organize their ships into 2 main groups. Group 1 is artillery/tachyon and in larger fleets will have a different target caller per wing, group 2 is pulse/autocannon/rail fit. Group 1 will follow primary targets as you would usually and alpha targets to dead.
Group 2 will follow no primary at all, and work independently or work in tandem of 2-3 pilots and the only thing they will do is lock up ships and shoot them to 90% armour then change targets. Also, and we didn't have it today, but they sometimes operated smartbombers on our fleet too. Although I imagine with the advent of bomb launchers we will see them employed instead.
The end result of this is broadcast history getting flooded with armour requests at about 3-4 a second, mostly from people who aren't getting shot at all any more by the time they are locked, while the people who are taking primary fire are getting downed because most of the logistics on field missed the request as there are just too many broadcasts to handle.
As both fleets were engaging on 0, the situation wasn't helped by Ironfist V dropping shrapnel bombs on the mixed blob either.
How do we win?
Simple. Discipline.
People need to be situationally aware. Don't listen for the "beep, beep, beep" of low shields. Leave brackets on, look around you. Are you being locked by 5 people or 50? If it's 5 people, you don't need those reps. If it's 50, then is the time to broadcast. You got bombed? So did 100 other people, if you broadcast then you and everyone else is going to die, just wait and look for the yellow boxes.
I realise that they had abaddons which are heavier pieces of equipment than geddons when it comes to tank and spank, but with the amount of repping power we had on the field people shouldn't have been dropping so fast. This is one of those situations where our FC's can bring the best concepts, give us the best positioning and so on, but the ultimate decider will be the collective skill of everyone involved, and how many of our F1 monkies can hold back the urge to hammer the armour button as soon as they see red.
I will be writing down names of people who are using the broadcast system incorrectly and I will be encouraging other people who fly logis in LNAW at least to do the same.
