In the early 1980s, DRAM manufacturers began offering DRAMs on tiny circuit boards which snap into special sockets, and by the late *80s these "single in line memory modules" (SIMMs) had become the most popular DRAM packaging. Board vendors who didn’t trust the new SIMM sockets used modules with pins: single inline pinned packages (SIPPs), which plug into sockets with more traditional pin receptacles.
The official speed of the ISA bus is about 8 MHz, but most cards, especially modern ones, will work fine on 11 MHz or more (some will even take as much as 20 MHz). If you don't mind experimenting, it may be worthwhile to see if your ISA cards run reliably at a higher bus clock. This is especially interesting if your drive nears the 2MB/s mark. The modulation techniques that a modem uses are standardized by the ITU-T (former CCITT), so that modems of different brands can connect to each other as they use the same modulation schemes. These standards are often incorporated in a protocol definition that is referred to by the letter V followed by a number. A modem is often advertised only by its fastest protocol, most of these modems "speak" slower protocols as well.
There are also standards on using data compression by the modem, and error control protocols. These standards can reduce the transmitted data by a factor four, by using advanced compression techniques.
On true laser printers, the selective charging is done by turning the laser on and off as it scans the rotating drum, using a complex arrangement of spinning mirrors and leases. The principle is the same as that of a disco mirror ball. The lights bounce off the ball onto the floor, track across the floor and disappear as the ball revolves. In a laser printer, the mirror drum spins incredibly quickly and is synchronized with the laser switching on and off. A typical laser printer will perform millions of switches, on and off every second. Inside the printer, the drum rotates to build one horizontal line at a time. Clearly, this has to be done very accurately. The smaller the rotation, the higher the resolution down the page - the step rotation on a modern laser printer is typically 1/600th of an inch, giving a 600dpi vertical resolution rating. Similarly, the faster the laser beam is switched on and off, the higher the resolution across the page.
If you create cross platform applications, you should avoid using Fox Font. Fox Font is an OEM MS-DOS font that you may find useful in some situations. But if you use Fox Font m an application you create in FoxPro for Windows, some of the characters in the application may not transport correctly to other FoxPro platforms.) The OSI reference model describes how information makes its way from application programs (such as spreadsheets) through a network medium (such as wires) to another application program in another computer. As the information to be sent descends through the layers of a given system, it looks less and less like human language and more and more like the ones and zeros that a computer understands. As an example of OSI-type communication, assume that System A has information to send to System B. The application program in System A communicates with System A's Layer 7 (the top layer), putting information on (and taking information on) the physical network which communicates with System A's Layer 6, which communicates with System A's Layer 5, and so on until System A's Layer 1 is reached.)
